The eighth annual showcase of women’s leadership also will screen ‘Megan Leavey’ and ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife.’

Female-directed and -fronted films from the past year make up the high-profile selections of the lineup for the 2018 Athena Film Festival.
The eighth annual event, which highlights women’s leadership onscreen and in real life, will include screenings of Wonder Woman, Lady Bird, The Zookeeper’s Wife, Megan Leavey and The Breadwinner, the animated film Oscar frontrunner executive produced by Angelina Jolie. The festival also will feature the New York premiere of I Am Not a Witch, from first-time writer and director Rungano Nyoni.
On the documentary front, the festival will screen Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, the Mariska Hargitay-produced I Am Evidence, the New York City premiere of It’s Criminal and the international premiere of My Year With Helen. The festival will feature virtual reality experiences as well as panels about the female gaze, social media and branding for filmmakers and ways to make the films, TV series, books and plays considered the most important include the voices and experiences of women and people of color.
“We are thrilled to announce an incredible lineup for the 2018 Athena Film Festival, which highlights diverse female talent both in front of and behind the camera,” said Melissa Silverstein, Athena Film Festival co-founder and artistic director and founder of Women and Hollywood. “Our goal as a festival has always been to highlight and recognize the strong and unique female voices and points of view in the industry by giving them a platform for their stories to be shared and amplified.”

Kathryn Kolbert, Athena co-founder and director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College, added: “It’s an honor to once again host this inspiring festival that celebrates the stories of courageous and bold women leaders and the filmmakers who create them. We are thrilled to recognize the diverse talents of current filmmakers, actors and executives and ignite a spark in the next generation.”
The Athena Film Festival celebrates women’s leadership and, during its 2018 edition, is set to honor J.J. Abrams, Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple, writer-director Amma Asante and actress Bridget Everett.
The festival, co-founded by the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College and Women and Hollywood, will take place Feb. 22-25 at Barnard College in New York City.
